Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
